FAQ

Twenty frequent questions about residence, documents, fees, theory, practical test and language. Answers follow public rules checked on 2026-10-18; local Motorizzazione offices may differ slightly, so confirm before acting.

Can I get a Patente B without an Italian residence permit?

Usually no. Non-EU citizens need a valid residence permit (or a renewal receipt accepted locally), and may need the original when collecting the licence. Check with the local Motorizzazione; do not register on a tourist visa.

Can I drive in Italy with a Chinese licence?

For short visits you usually need an international permit or a certified translation plus the Chinese licence. Long-term residents generally cannot keep using it indefinitely and often must take the Italian exam or convert under a bilateral agreement. China is not on the common automatic-conversion list; ask the Motorizzazione first.

Can I pass the theory exam without Italian?

The theory test is in Italian only (German/French may be requested in a few regions); there is no Chinese paper. If you can read but struggle, you may request audio support; with no Italian at all it is very hard. Learn the high-frequency terms and negatives first.

Can I bring a dictionary or phone to the exam?

No. Books, notes, phones, smartwatches and earphones are not allowed during the theory test; violating this can lead to removal and a fail.

How many questions, how long, and how many errors are allowed?

30 true/false questions in 20 minutes, at most 3 errors; the fourth error fails you, and unanswered questions count as errors.

I failed the theory test. When can I retake it?

At most 2 attempts within 6 months, at least 30 days apart; if both fail or the six months expire, you must register again.

Which documents do I need to register?

Typically: valid ID, tax code, residence permit (or receipt) for non-EU citizens, two white-background photos, medical certificate, form TT 2112 and PagoPA receipts. The local Motorizzazione list prevails.

How much does a Patente B roughly cost?

Official fees are about €26.40 + €16, plus a roughly €16 revenue stamp for the medical certificate; the medical visit is about €50–€100 and a driving school about €300–€800+. Totals vary widely by city, hours and whether you go independent; the current quote prevails.

Where do I get the medical check?

At an ASL, an authorised doctor or a school-affiliated clinic; the certificate is usually valid for 3 months, needs a revenue stamp and a photo.

How long does it take from registration to the licence?

There is no fixed answer: theory slots, practice progress and practical-test queues all matter. Two to six months is common; the learner permit lasts 12 months and you can book the practical test after at least one month.

Can I register independently (privatista)?

Yes, but you handle the Motorizzazione, provide a compliant car (dual controls for brake and clutch) and a qualified supervisor, and bear the risk of booking or paperwork mistakes.

What does the practical test cover?

Three phases: (1) vehicle preparation (seat, mirrors, doors, tyre/light checks); (2) at least two manoeuvres including reversing; (3) at least 25 minutes of driving in traffic (urban, extra-urban, roundabouts, junctions).

Can I take the practical test in an automatic car?

Yes, but the licence will carry code 78 and you may drive automatic cars only. To drive manual, you must test in a manual car.

Is there a Chinese version of the theory test?

No. The official test is in Italian (German/French may be requested in a few regions); some candidates may request audio. Our Chinese content is a study aid, not an exam language.

Can a driving school guarantee that I pass?

No. Any “guaranteed pass” or “answers for sale” promise is unreliable and may be illegal. The Motorizzazione runs the test; only your performance counts.

My permit is being renewed. Is the receipt accepted?

Practice varies: some offices accept the renewal receipt, others require a valid card. Call before registering and before collection, and carry originals plus copies.

What if I do not have a tax code (codice fiscale)?

Apply for a tax code at the Agenzia delle Entrate first; it is needed for registration, the medical certificate and the licence. A passport number is not a substitute.

What are the photo requirements?

Usually recent, white background, bare-headed, frontal, on non-thermal paper, two copies; the exact size depends on the local Motorizzazione.

What should I bring on exam day?

A valid ID; non-EU citizens should also bring the original residence permit (or the receipt accepted locally). Arrive early and leave phones, earphones and notes outside.

Does this site provide an official exam question archive or “guaranteed pass” material?

No. We only offer original Chinese guides, an IT–ZH glossary, original practice questions and an AI explainer for questions you paste yourself. We do not copy official exam material or sell answers.
